The refurbishment works were undertaken to the third floor of the Lock Tower, the control room for the lock gates controlling all vessels in and out of Bristol Port.
The largest section of works consisted of the removal and replacement of existing windows and doors for new aluminium double glazed units. Due to the difficulties of access, a scaffold loading bay was erected to third floor level and a mobile crane contractor was appointed on a contract lift, to lift the new windows up and the old windows down for disposal. This took a lot of organisation and there were a number of factors that impacted its success including weather conditions in such an exposed spot, and shipping traffic in and out of the port.
The works also included asbestos removal, the installation of a glazed partition, new kitchenette, suspended ceilings, sanitaryware, a full redecoration and new vinyl flooring. New small power and lighting was also designed and installed and solar blinds were installed to the new windows to complete the project.
